A Puppy’s First Dog Photography Session in Billingshurst: Remembering Dave, Welcoming Rodney
Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming Rodney into the Loxwood studio for his very first dog portrait photoshoot. Seeing his curious little face explore the space reminded me why puppy sessions hold such a special place in my heart.
There is nothing quite like the energy of a puppy. Between the oversized paws, the floppy ears, and the endless enthusiasm, working with young dogs is easily one of the absolute best parts of my job as a pet photographer.
Rodney 12 weeks old
For anyone who knows Only Fools and Horses, you'll appreciate the special bond behind these names! Before little Rodney joined the family, his older brother Dave sat in front of my camera. Sadly, Dave has since crossed the rainbow bridge, but seeing Rodney step into the studio felt like carrying on a wonderful family tradition. Here's to Dave's memory and Rodney's bright future.
Dave during his studio session
Of course, puppies are adorable and make us smile - that’s a given! But beyond the instant cuteness overload, booking a dedicated puppy photoshoot is one of the best decisions you can make for your new family member.
Here is why:
They won’t stay this young forever
It feels like you blink and that once tiny little thing is suddenly a full-grown dog! Capturing Rodney at this exact moment means his family will always have tangible artwork to remember just how small he once was. Years from now, when he’s fully grown, those portraits will be absolute treasures.
It builds positive experiences
Puppyhood is all about socialization and learning that the world is a fun, safe place. A puppy photoshoot isn't about rigid posing or strict rules; it’s designed to be a playdate filled with treats, gentle encouragement and lots of praise. For a young puppy like Rodney, exploring new textures, sounds, and gentle camera lights builds confidence and leaves them with a positive memory of meeting new people.
It’s a unique bonding experience
A photoshoot gives you dedicated, distraction-free time to focus entirely on them. Away from the daily rush and to-do lists, you get to sit back, play and watch your puppy shine. That shared laughter and quiet affection in front of the lens naturally deepens the bond between you both.
They don’t have greys yet
While distinguished senior dogs with silver muzzles have a truly beautiful charm, there is a distinct magic to capturing a puppy in their vibrant, younger years - before the grey hairs start sneaking into their snout! Documenting the contrast between their youthful coat now and the silver-muzzle down the road is part of telling their lifelong story.
Rodney having the best time
“Such amazing pictures of my puppy Rodney, Sara was amazing and patient working with him at such a young age, couldn’t be happier with the results!” - Tom Moore
